Expensive Taste

My sister has a three year old border collie named Kylie. She is the sweetest dog ever and is super smart. Sometimes even too smart for her own good. She is also pretty well-behaved, but sometimes she has a lack of self-control and can’t help herself. Kylie is also one of the only dogs that you can truly make feel guilty when she does something she knows is wrong.
On Christmas day, we got back from my aunt’s house and found her looking awfully guilty. When this occurs she doesn’t run to greet you, looks very sad, doesn’t put her tail up and acts extra sweet. We looked around the house because we knew she got into something, like potentially chewing up packages, seeing as she had just helped herself to some glittery Styrofoam balls on a package and my grandma’s favorite pastry brush earlier in the week. We found nothing and thought maybe she was not feeling well from eating these items. We went about the day and she eventually perked up and wanted to play.
Later that night my mom was in the living room and found the evidence… a $50 bill that was missing Mr. Grant’s body. Now mind you there were plenty of $1 bills in the box she found the money in, but she has expensive taste and decided to eat the $50 bill. My mom brought it into the family room because we knew who it was. Kylie saw the money and ran under the bed into the other room because she knew that she was not supposed to eat money (it wasn’t the first time either). Turns out it was my $50 she ate!
Kylie will act ashamed and hide from you for awhile, so you have to go seek her out and "lovie" on her to let her know that you forgive her and still love her. So I went to go find her and pulled her out from under the bed and held her in my lap and gave her pets and told her that it was ok. After awhile, she becomes convinced and then will play with you again.
I feel like this is a great illustration for us with God’s love. Sometimes we feel too ashamed of what we have done and think He will never forgive us and love us, but the truth is he does. We can run and hide from Him but He seeks after us offering His love just like I do with Kylie when she does something bad. He lavishes His love on us and says it’s ok. I forgive you and you are welcome in my arms. Sometimes this can be a hard concept to understand, but I think the picture of the unconditional love we have for our animals is a great metaphor for the unconditional love God has for us. We just have to accept it.
